French organ composers from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries were often attached not to massive structures but rather to the composition of short, song like pieces full of charm and poise and relying heavily upon organ colour. They grouped such pieces in Suites of Masses, and often individual movements took their titles from the specific organ colours to be employed in the present little piece by Clerambault, when the trumpet stop is heard alternately in the bass and treble registers.
