Louis Couperin, an uncle of the great Francois was a pupil of Chambonnieres and a musician at the court of Louis XIV. In 1653 he became organist at St. Gervais, a post which was occupied continuously by members of the Couperin family for more than two hundred years. In the present stately Chaconne a striking chordal refrain alternates with quieter episodes.
