We think of Liszt.the performer as a pianist but there are three large-
scale organ works which, together with a number of smaller pieces have
secured for themselves an important place in the romantic literature. One
of these is the Fantasia and Fugue on B.A.C.H.
Other composers have used the BACH motto as a theme. Robert
Schumann for example composed six fine fugues on Bach's name, No
other composer however has rivalled Liszt's work in its intensity. Fiery
and menacing, obsessed with its motto from the outset, it remains a
milestone in 19th century music and is a final tribute to Bach.
