Daquin came from a distinguished family whose members occupied prominent positions in French life. He was a child prodigy. At the age of six he was invited to play before Louis XIV who prophesied that he would become "One of the great men of his century". The piece being played here is one of various traditional Christmas melodies which he treats in a variety of forms. Each of his works can be regarded as a miniature masterpiece.
