Claude Balbastre, organist and harpsichordist held court appointments which ended abruptly with the Revolution. One of his last performances was to play his own arrangement of the Marseillaise on the organ of the deconsecrated Notre Dame Cathedral. His performances were extremely popular. When he played his noel variations at St Roch each Christmas Eve he drew such large crowds that finally in 1762 the Archbishop forbade him to play.
