The Toccata and Fugue in D Minor is Bach's most celebrated organ piece. It has achieved immense popularity not only in its original form but in transcriptions for piano and for orchestra.
A vivid and stormy toccata is followed by a flowing fugue whose subject is derived from the opening toccata figure. The fugue is remarkable for its dramatic and emotional growth: after an imposing interrupted cadence, the virtuoso writing of the toccata is resumed leading to a dramatic conclusion.
